The 2009 Sierra 1500 lasts over 250,000 miles with only some dashboard and alternator problems. At $8,530–18,830, it’s a good value for a strong, reliable truck.

The Good
The cabin is quiet, interior materials are luxurious and the towing capacity is excellent.
The Bad
The turning radius is bigger than rivals, the base engine is weak and most backseats are cramped.
Is the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Used Truck?
- Yes, 2009 is a good year for the Sierra. Owner reviews enjoy the truck’s towing capacity, comfortable suspension, and strong engines.
- Reliability ratings are above average. Trucks from 2005–2013 are all good, with a surge in problems reported for 2014.
- Performance is poor from the base V6, but the largest V8 is one of the most powerful engines available for a truck.
- The Sierra 1500 is a very safe truck, earning a perfect 5 star rating in government crash tests.
- Fuel economy is okay for a truck at up to 17 MPG combined.

I highly recommend this vehicle.
I love everything about my truck. The gas mileage is great considering the size and year of my vehicle. The price for parts seem to be fairly priced. I would highly recommend this vehicle to prospective buyers due to the features and safety that GNC has.

I like that my truck is very reliable and I have had no issues with it. It is a spacious truck and I am able to fit 2 car-seats in the back. The bed of the truck is also very spacious and we have used it several times to haul large items. I have no complaints on this truck whatsoever.

Since it's a bigger truck I have a lot of blind spots. It doesn't get good gas mileage
I like my extended cab. I can pull things. Use it to haul things but also use it for everyday use

Sierra truck review great truck.
Great truck but some of the issues have been the back driver side door lock sticks. The airbag sensor needed replace but everything else about the truck is great I love it. I am looking to add some aftermarket accessories once I have the funds. The truck has a great ride and plenty of room. The towing capacity is plenty for whatever I need it to.

Alternator failures happen often at around 50,000 miles. Replacing the alternator fixes the problem, but prices are high at about $600.
Excessive oil consumption shows up according to owners at around 55,000 miles. Most owners check the oil regularly and top it off as needed. Some replace seals and valves in the engine, which can cost around $2,000.

Jenny T
It is very reliable, have not had many problems that could not be fixed quickly, change the oil every 3000 miles and have filter check and belts, did have problem with rotary on one side, and have had to replace battery after 10 years.
How Much Is the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Worth?
Blue book values range from $8,530–18,830, making the Sierra around $1,000 cheaper than a Chevy Silverado 1500 or Nissan Titan. When new, the price range was $19,375 to $47,675. Depreciation is similar to other big trucks, losing around 5% of its current value per year.

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 series is similar in size to the Toyota Tundra and Dodge Ram 1500. There are three cabins available including a 2-door regular cab, 4-door extended cab, and 4-door crew cab. Passenger room is excellent in the crew cab, but cramped in the rest.

How Does the Sierra 1500 Compare to the Competition?
The Ford F-150 is a popular rival that starts at about $1,000 less. Off-road performance is better in the F-150, but the Sierra has a more luxurious interior. We recommend the F-150 since it lasts slightly longer, but both are well-made trucks.
The Chevy Silverado 1500 is another competitor costing about $1,000 more. Both trucks are built on the same platform, but the Sierra has a better suspension and a higher quality interior. We recommend the Sierra since it’s more affordable and comfortable.

Nick N on May 23, 2021
It has low miles for the year and doesn't have any major mechanical flaws like many others it's year.
I like the interior quality and design. Has a lot of good features for the year and model. Wish the outside wheel wells weren't rusting out already.
Brent D on March 1, 2021
Good solid pickup. It does what I ask of it.
Its a solid pickup. One issue is the mirrors are a little difficult to get adjusted properly. The mileage could be better but it's a v8. Decent ride quality not too rough. Overall a pretty comfortable and well performing vehicle. I would have preferred leather seats. The lack of rear window defrost is less than ideal as well.

A reliable truck that has taken good care of me and my family since 2009.
I love the pickup because it is reliable and I am able to travel when I need to with the pickup. I also like that the pickup has not needed many repairs since buying the pickup it is easy to maintain, change oil, air filter and keep clean on the inside and outside of the truck.
Cherie A on October 24, 2020
Reliable, comfortable, great towing capacity.
Performance has been really good. Only major problem we have had is the trailer towing module went out. We pull our camper all over with it and have had no problems with towing. Has been extremely reliable. Seats are comfortable and all the trim work. I wouldn't own any other truck other than a GMC.
Tricia S on September 22, 2020
It has a lout of awesome features for Minnesota winters.
I live that it is large, durable, safe, has auto traction and 4WD for safe driving in the snow in the winter, love the sensors that tell me when a tire pressure is low. I dislike the impossible set up for changing a tire and having to move kids from car seats in the back seat.
William B on September 15, 2020

I like my truck for the space and the feel of safety while driving. Also I like the four wheel drive when in winter or just off road. I dislike the fuel mileage but live with it. Because the likes outweigh the dislike.

2009 GMC Sierra work truck.
It is a 2009 GMC Sierra work truck with a 4. 3l v6 engine. It came with ac and a radio as its only real features. Everything else like power windows/locks, etc. Have to be installed if wanted. Other than that the truck performs well. It got 15mpg new and has done everything I have asked of it so far. Overall, it is a very sound vehicle.
Victoria V on August 2, 2020

This truck gets really good gas mileage. Has great power for a 6-cylinder truck. Only thing I would change is to get an extended cab. Feels a little claustrophobic. . Even though there is plenty of legroom. , seats are comfortable. Also has a nice sound system and CD player. Very responsive and easy to handle.

My truck is very reliable. It drives and rides nice and is very comfortable. It has the 5. 3l motor which is gms best motor. It has great towing capacity. It is also a 4x4. I have zero problems with mine. My GMC came with a 6 disc CD changer. Am FM radio and XM satellite.
Lori K on July 10, 2020
Pulls well and acceleration is good. Overall a good truck.
I have over a hundred thousand miles on my truck and had to replace the rockers and a starter. Other than that the long bed truck is great. The truck is easy to handle and drives very well in snow. Love the cushioned seats and the ease of controls and a dash that is easy to read.

Should have a screen radio and backup camera with it being a denali truck package one would think that it would come with all the bells and whistles. Also with it having a 6. 2 motor there are shifting issues when shifting from park into gear and driving sometimes it jumps.

2009 GMC review: 10 years old and still going.
I love this vehicle. Considering it is 10 years old, it drives very well and does not have many problems. I recently had to get the engine lifted to change out some parts in the engine. However, other than that, I love all of the amenities that come with the vehicle (sunroof, leather seats, etc). I would strongly recommend the vehicle to anyone. In addition, it has a large bed that is helpful for towing and the cab is large enough to fit 5 people easily.

My truck has served me well. It runs great with minimal problems throughout the years. I am bummed that it is only 2 wheel drive. I have found some adventures difficult to handle due to this. The full size bed assists with my travels. I installed a tow package for an RV and it has worked really well. I plan to have this truck for many more years to come.

Great truck, very reliable, but it rusts like crazy. Still it's rusty but trusty and comfortable and good for towing up to 9500 lbs. Gets about 16 mpg in normal commuting, never gets stuck in the snow. Runs like a tractor with the 5.3 vortec. Haven't tried e85 yet but it's nice to have the option.
