I have had a perpetual problem with the blower on this blazer. This is now the 4th time that I have progressively lost the blower control on this car. Initially the dealer tried to fix it by replacing the blower switch, but this failed in short order. The other 2 times, with two different repair shops, the problem has been determined to be the blower fan resistor. The last blower resistor replacement was about a year ago. It worked beautifully for about 3 months, I started to lose the lower settings, and then eventually it stopped working all together. It seems to me there must be a bigger cause for this same issue to continue to recur. I'm looking for help and suggestion on what may be behind the repeated failure. Also, we're willing to try the repair on our own this time, but need help locating the resistor to replace it (and whatever else you may determine could be causing this)

Based on your description, I feel the blower motor itself is going bad and drawing too many amps. As a result, the first thing to go is the resister. Have the motor tested for amperage draw and let me know what you find.

I was able to locate the resistor and pull it out and check it. The resistor seems to be just fine. So I went "upstream" to the relay. One of the contacts inside of the relax was fried to a crisp, and had actually melted part of the plastic casing inside. While I can replace the relay, the plug that goes into the relay is another matter. I cannot figure out how to remove and replace the plug end - it appears to go straight into the wiring harness. Thoughts?

If the connector to the wiring harness has melted down, there should be small clips that when depressed with a small screwdriver allow the wiring to come out.
LEt me know if that is what you mean. I would also check the draw from the motor. It sounds like it is drawing too much power.

Will check the line draw to the motor and let you know. I found the clips this weekend, but the wires did not seem to want to come out and I didn't want to pull on them too much since I wasn't sure I could get a replacement part. Will check on all of it and get back with you. What would the name of the part (or part number) be for the piece that attaches to the wiring harness and slides up into the blower motor relay?

Yes, I guess it would be the plug... see pictures attached... it burned through the side of the casing or the plug it shorted so badly... but it is all cleaned up and did work when connected to a new relay. I will need to buy a new plug to put on, however... and will test the fan this evening and let you know.
Not great quality taken with cell cam -but I think you can see it enough

Actually, the pictures are great. It looks like something is drawing too much power and overheating the connection.
Let me know what you find.

Hello, maybe something wrong with the speed switch? The high blower speed doesn't use a resistor. High speed fuse, hvac 30 amp, underhood electrical center.
The blower relay has to be energized for the high speed. The feed for the control side of the relay, comes the hvac controller on the dash, hi speed selection. That relay is not energized for the lower speeds.

Find the blower motor,
engine compartment side of the firewall
on the passenger side.
The resisters will be a few inches away from the blower.
The air going past them keep them from over heating.

FAQs
Blower Motor Resistor: Where Is the Blower Motor Resistor on a ...? ›
If the resistor fails or shorts, the blower motor might remain stuck at a particular speed. While you could still use the air conditioning or heater at his speed, you will want to repair it for complete functionality again.
Will a blower motor work without the resistor? ›If the resistor fails or shorts, the blower motor might remain stuck at a particular speed. While you could still use the air conditioning or heater at his speed, you will want to repair it for complete functionality again.
Do I have to disconnect the battery to change blower motor resistor? ›HOW TO REMOVE AND INSTALL A BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR. Remove the negative cable from your vehicle's battery to ensure the electrical system in the car is not charged. Locate the resistor. It will be adjacent to the blower housing.
Should you replace the resistor when you replace the blower motor? ›We do suggest that you replace the resistor at the same time. It may not be critical, but this will keep the system more uniform.
Does a blower motor resistor have a fuse? ›A fuse is often located on the resistor board. The fuse only protects the low and medium blower speeds. High speed will still work if the resistor fuse is blown.
How long does it take to replace a blower resistor? ›The average cost to replace the blower motor resistor at a repair shop is between $44 and $55 in parts and $70 in labor costs, for a total cost of around $114 to $125. On the other hand, you can easily fix the blower motor resistor at home in about an hour (even if you're a beginner) and for around $70.
What causes a blower motor resistor to go out? ›They fail on their own quite often. Repeated failures are typically caused by excessive current draw from the blower motor (usually caused by tight bearings), or restricted airflow past the resistor causing overheating (plugged cabin air filter, dirty heater core or A/C evaporator).
What happens if you bypass a resistor? ›Bypassing such a resistor may result in a supply that will work, at least for awhile, but will be susceptible to damage from high inrush currents.
How do you know if a resistor is bad? ›After connecting the probes to the resistor terminals, check the value on the multimeter. If the resistor is fine, the multimeter will show its value in Ω, kΩ, or MΩ. However, if the resistor is bad or damaged, the multimeter may display 0 or 1.
Where is the blower motor reset button? ›Follow these simple steps: First, turn off the power supply to the furnace by turning off the breaker in the circuit box. Locate the reset button on the furnace and press it to reset the furnace. It is usually located inside the blower compartment on the side of the blower motor.
How much does it cost to replace a blower motor resistor? ›
How much does a blower motor resistor cost? To replace the blower motor resistor, it would cost you anywhere between $50 to$150 – this includes the cost of equipment and labor. However, by doing it yourself at home, you can save up to $70.
How much does it cost to have a blower motor resistor replaced? ›The average cost for a Blower Motor Resistor Replacement is between $116 and $148. Labor costs are estimated between $43 and $54 while parts are priced between $73 and $94.
