It seems that Mark Rutte made a wrong assessment by dropping his previous government except for a few reluctant asylum seekers. Perhaps Yesilgöz did not understand his campaign instructions well or she turns out to be more stubborn or ambitious than expected. In any case, you just have to hope that the EU does not go along with Mark Rutte's perverse power game. The fact that he has managed to fill his bag of tricks in the Netherlands with lying and cheating in recent years should not be a guarantee for a prestigious job in the EU, let alone the position of SG of NATO. It is interesting to follow this development. Extremely ego-driven leaders overplay their hand at some point. It is the rule rather than the exception. There are many explanations for this. The most obvious explanations can be found in their personality. There is usually something fundamentally wrong with that. It is not complicated to find out. Paying closer attention to the observable differences between what these people say and what they do can clarify a lot. Dare to look behind the masks these people are wearing. Find their true face. Seen in that light, the formation of the cabinet will be an inspiring process. Know, you're not going to see it until you get it.

Tomorrow, professor Beatrice de Graafand I will speak atStudium Generale (Utrecht University)about 'democracy in a shaky world order'. The event, which will be conducted in Dutch, can be followed in person at the Academiegebouw (Aula) of Utrecht University, or online through a live stream from 20:00-21:30. Entrance is free!Since the war in Ukraine, the cards seem to have been shuffled again on the world stage. Russia does not care about international law, China is pushing the boundaries in the South China Sea, and Turkish President Erdogan is claiming an increasingly prominent role. The message is clear: Western dominance is no longer a given. Meanwhile, the US is increasingly introspective and Europe is failing to make a fist. What does this mean for the future of liberal democracy in the world? How do the major players view current international agreements on human rights and trade? What does multipolar world order mean? And what role can Europe play in the new world order?

All the people who advocate "peace" between Israel and the Arabs inhabitants in the territories neglect to listen to the Arabs. One will not hear the Arab inhabitants talk about "peace". They talk about "Palestine". Their definition of "Palestine" is not the same definition the alleged Right Forums are using. Moreover, people tend to disregard a very interesting ahistorical phenomenon that still takes place - the return of the Jewish exiles to their historical homeland. It is against the rule of history. As long as people do not recognize this phenomenal event, they will continue to talk about "peace" with no results whatsoever. In the meantime, Israel prospers, advances from very poor country at its independence in 1948 to a first world country today. The Arabs who do not accept this process will remain in poverty and misery. The Arabs who accept Israel will prosper and advance and leave their belligerent "brothers" (if there is "brotherhood" among Arabs) to the dust bin of history.

Welcome interview with our university's chairperson Geert ten Dam on the tensions that have arisen in our university's community in the wake of the violence between Hamas and Israel. Ten Dam explains that the Executive Board's primary task is to guarantee the academic freedom and safety for all our students and staff, enabling them to participate in academic debates on this war and its wider context. Yet this implies that the board aims to mitigate escalation and polarization as these threaten this academic freedom and safety for all. Indeed, if the university as institution would take a position it would as such present such a threat. She elucidates what motivated the Executive board last year to denounce the Ukraine-invasion by Russia yet at the same time indicates that the current war is in several ways different. Nonetheless, Ten Dam also asks herself "whether we have done the right thing at the time". What is clarified in the interview is how the institution's task, potential actions and responsibility is fundamentally different from those of its community's members. Indeed, as Central and Faculty Diversity Officers we presented last year a mandate statement which was quite clear in this as we wrote: "Principally, though, while caring for the potential impact of conflicts on our students and staff we should avoid bringing the conflict to our university campus. Even though we must acknowledge that in such times it is difficult to keep personal and academic spheres separate, it is our responsibility to facilitate this separation. This also means that as aninstitution we should be carefull in our expressions and actions not to alienate those who are – by their nationality or culture etc. - connected to one or the other conflicting parties." #diversityequityinclusion #academicfreedom #gazawar University of Amsterdam #centraldiversityoffice

Mee eens met realistisch commentaar #robdewijk in #hcssnl en #TrouwRe: 'Geen wonder dat Lavrov het Westen beschuldigt van willekeur, dubbele standaarden en ‘wij-zij-denken’. Hij verwerpt ‘valse tegenstellingen’ zoals ‘democratieën versus autocratieën', zie ook uit: 'Some Rules of Global Politics Matter More Than Others' (Stephen M. Walt in Foreign Policy)'Saying the U.S. is just trying to uphold the rules is politer than saying its goal is to preserve U.S. primacy in perpetuity, weaken China permanently, topple governments it doesn’t like, or undermine its other adversaries. Of course, when U.S. officials say “rules-based order,” they mean the current order, whose rules were mostly made in America.'https://lnkd.in/e6x9hC9f en uit: 'Biden’s State Department Needs a Reset'(Stephen M. Walt in Foreign Policy)'The sad fact is that the Biden administration has done an excellent job of responding to a problem that was at least partly of its own making. The roots of the Ukraine war predate Biden’s inauguration, but neither Biden nor Blinken saw the war coming soon enough. They did not recognize that Russia saw the trends in Ukraine as an existential threat, nor did they do everything they could have to head the war off.'https://lnkd.in/eMD-QK-J#foreignpolicy #trouw #hcssnl #minpres #minbz #financiënmin #defensiemin #tweedekamer #eerstekamer #parlement #nrc #volkskrant #npo #nos #bnr
